Roosevelt is prominently featured in Washington, D.C.'s
FDR Memorial.
FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT
Roosevelt inherited the presidency during one of our
nation's worst period of time. He was president through
the Great Depression and WW11. He is the only President
ever elected to four terms. At age 39, FDR was stricken
with polio, and spent much of the rest of his life in
a wheelchair. FDR was our 32nd President. In an effort
to get the U.S. out of the grip of the disastrous Great
Depression , Roosevelt created many agencies trying
to get the our Nation back on track. The most important
was his "New Deal". The Civilian Conservation
Corps (CCC) hired 250,000 unemployed young men to work
on numerous projects. He gave the Federal Trade Commission
broad powers to provide mortgage relief to millions.
He started the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to
finance railroads and industry. He set up the Agricultural
Adjustment Administration (AAA). The list goes on and
on, including The National Industrial Recovery Act,
Public Works Administration, The Securities and Exchange
Commission, The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), The
Works Progress Administration (WPA), The Social Security
Act, The U.S. Housing Authority, and created the minimum
wage, to name a few.
FDR was in declining health since 1940. He had high
blood pressure, long term heart disease, along with
the strain of his paralysis. On March 30, 1945, Roosevelt
died at Warm Springs Georgia. No man in history has
ever accomplished what he did while President. He started
out with The Great Depression, and ended up with WW11.
He established the United State's leadership role on
the world stage. His speech on Dec. 8, 1941: a date
which will live in infamy, will forever be remembered.
